Background

At a conference on strategic management for accountants in 1971, a work team convened to research the “strategic skills “required by professional accountants. The results were compiled in an official report recommending that a new curriculum be developed to include strategic skills in the training of professional accountants.

Traditionally, professional training courses for accountants focused on operational and tactical skills while omitting strategic management skills. The need for strategic management skills, however, has become increasingly apparent. As accountants move up career ladder, strategic management skills are essential as is an awareness of new technology, regulations and company organization. With these needs in mind, the Canadian Chartered Institute of Finance and Accountancy (CCIFA) was found.
